Buying a home can be exciting, but it can also be a source of stress. There are many factors to consider, and it’s no wonder many home buyers feel anxious and get cold feet. I’ve had a conversation with Dill Ward, a seasoned agent in the Portland area and the founder ofWomen with Moxie, discussing some of the reasons why many home buyers today are backing out of their contracts.

1. Market uncertainty. Home buyers are hesitant to push through with purchasing a home because we’re in the middle of an election and a season change. Concerns about fluctuating interest rates and home prices make it difficult for buyers to stay firm in their decisions.

2. Information Overload. There is so much information from news, social media, and well-meaning people around us that it’s become difficult to sift through it all. Buyers can quickly become confused and unsure about what to believe.

3. Fear of missing out. I’ve noticed that, aside from interest rates, most buyers are pressured to find the perfect home or miss out on a great opportunity, which can lead to anxiety. Some things people think about most are home inspections and their condition.

“Nobody has ever timed the market perfectly.”

4. Timing the market. Buyers also worry about being able to secure financing or whether they are buying at the right time, given the current market conditions. Many are also concerned about not having the time to get everything done according to their desired schedule.

A way to reduce anxiety in today’s market is to have a good Realtor. A real estate professional can act as your anxiety manager, guiding, supporting, and clarifying the home-buying process. Nobody has ever timed the market perfectly, and a real estate agent can give you a realistic perspective and relieve the pressure of making the best decision every time because we don’t know the exact low interest rates or when the price will start going back up.

What’s important is that you are comfortable with the home you love and confident in your decision. You can’t move the house, so ensure you are where you want to be. Remember why you’re buying a home in the first place, and focus on your long-term goals without getting too caught up in short-term fluctuations.

If you plan to enter the market, give yourself grace and kindness. Breathe and enjoy the moment you finally move into your new home with your loved ones.
